Three: Private J. T. Carpenter, The Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment, who was wounded and suffered trench foot in 1916

1914-15 Star (10789 Pte. J. T. Carpenter. The Queen's R.); British War and Victory Medals (10789 Pte. J. T. Carpenter. The Queen's R.), contact marks, very fine (3)

John T. Carpenter served with the 1st Battalion, The Queen's Regiment in France from 6 March 1915. He was a member of 'D' Company and suffered a gunshot wound to the thigh on 15 July 1916 in their costly action at Fricourt & Bazentin le Petit. Recovered from his wounds and again back with 'D' Company, he was admitted for trench foot on 15 December 1916, having been in the Front Line trenches at Rancourt. Some 64 men were sent to hospital with the same complaint, one can only imagine the conditions.

Carpenter transferred to the Machine Gun Corps and is noted as having deserted in August 1919, losing the entitlement to his 1914-15 Star. Reinstated and returned to duty, he was eventually discharged in December 1920 (TNA SKR/DAT/IP/43415, refers).
