Three: Private G. R. Woodage, 2nd Battalion, The Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment, who was wounded by gunshot to the head, being transferred to the Royal Defence Corps

1914 Star (S-305 Pte. G. R. Woodage. 2/The Queen's R.); British War and Victory Medals (305 Pte. G. R. Woodage. The Queen's R.), good very fine (3)

The 'S' prefix was allotted to those who had seen previous service with The Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment and were - for the most part - time expired men, some of whom had previous service in India and or South Africa. As evidenced, most went on to earn the 1914 Star during the Great War.

George Richard Woodage was born in 1878, a native of Lower Caversham and re-enlisted into The Queen's Regiment on 31 August 1914. He served in France with the 2nd Battalion from 8 November 1914 and was soon after wounded by a gunshot to the head. His name featured on hospital register for March 1915. Due to the severity of his wounds, he was thence transferred to the E. C. Labour Centre and the Royal Defence Corps. He died in 1956 and is buried in the Henley Road Cemetery.
