1914 Star, with clasp (8013 Pte A. Menzies, 2/A.&S.Highrs); British War and Victory Medals (8013 Pte A. Menzies. A.&S.Highrs.), mounted as worn, light pitting, very fine (3)

Andrew Menzies was born at Manchester on 30 December 1879 and entered the war in France on 10 August 1914. The 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders were posted to the 19th Independent Brigade and saw action with them at the Battle of Mons.

The Brigade arrived at the line somewhat late in the battle at around 15:00 and were sent into the western end of the line. The Argylls served as the reserve at the time and as such saw more action during the retreat than the main battle itself.

It was during this withdrawal that Menzies was taken prisoner of war with the German records stating that he was taken at Thulin, about 20 kilometres west of Mons; sold together with copied service papers.
