Edward Martin was born in Hopton Wafers, Salop and lived in Doddington with his parents where he worked as a quarry worker upon the outbreak of the Great War. He enlisted at Shrewsbury and was posted to the 1st Battalion, with whom he was disembarked at the Western Front on 12 November 1914. Serving there for a time, he was admitted to No. 2 General Hospital on 12 January 1915 suffering from septic fingers. Martin at some point suffered a gunshot wound and was ostensibly invalided home to England, where he died of a brain haemorrhage on 19 February 1916, at the age of 32. He was interred at the Shrewsbury General Cemetery, and his father Arthur claimed his pension; sold together with copied research.
