Henry Sawkins was born at Worrensworld, Canterbury, Kent in 1865 and attested at Hastings on 15 May 1889 with the 1st Brigade, Cinque Ports Depot, Royal Artillery. He served in India with the 3rd Mountain Battery, Royal Artillery from 18 February 1890, returning to Britain on 26 January 1899 he was transferred to the Royal Artillery Regiment Depot Staff on 14 June 1899. Transferring again to the Western Division on 24 November 1900 Sawkins was discharged on 1 April 1902.
