Ronald David Cannings born in July 1930 at Pewsey, Wiltshire. He joined the General Service Corps 1 October 1947, then enlisted in the Royal Engineers. Admitted to hospital 26 March 1954, he served in the Canal Zone and Malaya Campaigns.
Kuwait gained independence from Great Britain in 1961, which lead to Iraq being interested in Kuwait. In 1962 the Kuwait Liaison Team was set up, this team consisted of a Lieutenant-Colonel and six technical N.C.O.s who provided military assistance and liaised with Kuwaiti Forces by training junior Officers and N.C.O.s to help deter the threat of Iraq. Cannings served as a Sergeant seconded to the Kuwait Liaison Team from 1962-64. The Team was made very famous when some were held captive and held as human shields during the Iraq War in 1990-91. Cannings was the only Engineer there the rest were from the Royal Army Ordnance Corps from the names seen.
