(x) The Great War Bronze Memorial Plaque awarded in memory of Lance Corporal J. Willmott, 1st Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment, who was killed in action on 19 August 1916
Great War Bronze Memorial Plaque (James Willmott), extremely fine
James Willmott enlisted to join the First World War on 13 August 1914. He served with the 1st Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment on the Western Front, one of the first Battalions to go overseas. His first military engagement was the Battle of Mons, and the subsequent retreat, the Battle of the Marne, the Battle of the Aisne and the First Battle of Ypres. In March 1915, he was briefly admitted to hospital for measles, an illness that proved a significant problem for the British Army at the time. A few months later, Willmott fought in the Battle of Loos in September 1915. Then, just under a year later on 19 August 1916, Willmott was killed in action during the Battle of the Somme. He was further entitled to the 1914 Star with clasp, and British War and Victory Medals, all of which were returned to the War Office.
