James Collins was born in circa 1879 in Macclesfield. He was married to Phoebe Ann Collins and had three children, Emily, James and Thomas. He voluntarily enlisted on 8 August 1915 and served in the Balkans with the 1/7th Cheshire Regiment. In 1916, he is recorded with having served with the School of Cookery, Territorial Force. Collins was killed in action on 26 March 1917 on the first day of the First Battle of Gaza, aged 38. He is buried in Palestine and is commemorated on the Jerusalem Memorial, Part One A-L. He was further entitled to British War and Victory Medals.
