The King's South Africa Medal awarded to Private J. Flett, King's Own Scottish Borderers, who was reported as Missing in Action on 15 February 1901 at Klip Drift and who saw further service in the Great War King's South Africa 1901-02, 2 clasps, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902 (6880 Pte J. Flett. K. O. Scot: Bord:), light pitting, good fine possibly better
John Flett was born at St.Giles, Edinburgh and was a type setter before he attested into the King's Own Scottish Borderers at Glasgow on 6 December 1899. He served in South Africa between 30 April 1900 - 15 December 1902 and served with the Mounted Infantry. He was reported as Missing in Action at Klip Drift on 15 February 1901 but returned safely to his lines. Flett then served in India from 15 February 1902 - 28 December 1906, and served at Home between 29 December 1906 - 4 December 1914. With the outbreak of the Great War, Flett served as part of the B.E.F. from 5 December 1914 but returned home and was admitted to 1st Scottish General Hospital, Aberdeen between 23-29 December 1914 suffering from Malaria. He remained Home until 3 July 1915 when he then joined the M.E.F. however he was disembarked at Malta with debility on 22 August 1915 and returned Home serving from 14 September 1915 until he was discharged on 20 April 1916 as no longer being fit for service.
He is further entitled to a Q.S.A. with clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Fee State and Transvaal, a 1914-15 Star Trio and a Silver War badge (B3863).
