Sydney Smith was born at Altrincham, Cheshire and enlisted at Manchester into the 77th (Manchester) Company, Imperial Yeomanry on 19 March 1900. He served in South Africa between 15 April 1900 - 17 February 1901. Returning Home on 18 February 1901 and was discharged at his own request on 10 April 1901.
