Walter Spencer served with the West Yorkshire Royal Engineers (Volunteers). He re-enlisted on 1 April 1908 and served during the Great War with the West Riding Division Royal Engineers and entered the war in Egypt on 30 March 1915, he served as a Corporal and had further service numbers, 76 and 478002. He was disembodied on 10 January 1919 and is additionally entitled to a 1914-15 Star Trio and a Silver War Badge (522963) due to the gunshot wounds received.

His name and number appears on the Memorial at Sheffield Town Hall for those who served in South Africa 1899-1902.
