Richard Norwood was born circa 1883 in Newton-on-Trent, Lincolnshire, the youngest of six children to Joseph Norwood and his wife Mary. Whilst living at Wheeton, Yorkshire he enlisted at Middlesbrough to serve in the Great War with the 18th (Queen Mary's Own Royal) Hussars and was given regimental number 20055. Norwood and his regiment arrived in France on 18 October 1915 to serve on the Western Front.
Norwood was killed in action at the age of 35 on 27 March 1918, likely during the Battle of Rosières in France on which day the Germans captured the town of Albert. He is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial in France and is entitled to 1914-15 Star trio; sold together with copied research.
