Patrick Hoban born at Leeds was a labourer when he enlisted in the 4th West Yorkshire Regiment as a Private on 1 May 1899. He embarked for South Africa with his Regiment seeing service in the Boer War and is entitled to a Q.S.A. with clasps Cape Colony & South Africa 1901. Discharged on 9 January 1902 he subsequently re-enlisted in the West Yorkshire Regiment on 27 June 1908. Although still serving in 1917 he doesn't appear to have been entitled to any Great War medals.
