An unusual double issue Efficiency Medal pair awarded to Corporal R. E. Lowthorpe, Sherwood Foresters, a long-served member of The Green Howards, with whom he was wounded in Normandy on 19 July 1944

Robert Edward Lowthorpe was born on 24 August 1921 at Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire and was a farm labourer at Walkergate by 1939, being a member of the 5th Battalion, The Green Howards. He sometime transferred to the 7th Battalion and would have landed on D-Day at around 0800hrs at Ver-Sur-Mer, being assisted by the tanks of the 4/7th Dragoon Guards and 86th Field Artillery.
Lowthorpe was wounded in action on 19 July 1944, whilst the unit were around Orbois and the cross-roads at Le Lion Vert. He died in 'God's Own County' in May 2004.
