Garrett Mansfield was born at Courceys, Cork, Ireland on 14 March 1884 and joined the Royal Navy on 14 March 1902. At the outbreak of the Great War he was serving on Gibraltar until he served on Vivid I from 28 November 1914 - 31 March 1915 and then served on Warspite between 1 April 1915 - 1 February 1921. Mansfield completed his service with the Royal Navy on 22 March 1924 and joined the Royal Fleet Reserve on 8 November 1924.

John Edward Philbrow was born at Havant, Hampshire on 16 July 1902 and was a labourer before he enlisted into the Royal Navy. He received his L.S. & G.C. medal in August 1935. He served on Glasgow at the outbreak of the Second World War before serving on La Cordeliere (Victory 2) which was a Torpedo Boat captured by the British at Portsmouth on 3 July 1940. Philbrow was to then serve on Nimrod on 1 May 1941 and was by now a Petty Officer Steward and was to see further service on Victory 3, Nile and Pembroke 3. He was released from the service on 18 October 1945.
