Joseph Palmer Farrant was born on 24 May 1895 at Bermondsey, London and later joined the Royal Navy on 28 January 1912. He had continuous service during the First World War in a variety of ships, and was serving on H.M.S. Mindful at the Battle of Jutland.

Farrant was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal on 1 February 1934 and was discharged on 10 May 1927; sold together with a copy of his service record.
