The Royal Household group of three awarded to J. Abercrombie Junior, a Stalker at Balmoral, whose father was the long-served Head Stalker on the Royal Estate

Royal Household Faithful Service Medal, G.VI.R., suspension dated '1921-1941' (Abercrombie, James (Junr.)), in its Royal Mint case of issue; Jubilee 1935; Coronation 1937, good very fine (3)

James Abercrombie was born in 1905 at Crathie, the son of James Abercrombie, Head Stalker on the Balmoral Estate. His father is affectionately recalled by Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother in various letters and their can be no doubt of the happy hours that young Abercrombie will have spent with his father and senior members of the Royal Family out on the Estate. It is highly likely they will have imparted some of their skills and would perhaps have shared in the 'blooding' ceremonies which are traditional. Given that the late Queen Elizabeth II was extremely fond of deer stalking and shot her first stag aged 19, whilst still a Princess, it was perhaps Abercrombie who may have been up on the hill.

Having taken his Medal in 1941 and continued as a Stalker at Lochnagar - The Royal Munro - Abercrombie died on 23 July 1995. He is buried in Crathie Kirkyard, close to many legends of the Royal Household, namely John Brown and Annie MacDonald.
