An unusual 'East Africa' M.S.M. awarded to Pioneer F. Rutter, East African Pioneer Company, who was additionally 'mentioned' for good service in that theatre of war

Frederick Rutter, born in 1892, travelled out to British East Africa in April 1914 and gave his occupation as 'Golf Instructor'. Upon the outbreak of the Great War four months later he attested for service as Private (regimental number 75) in the East Africa Regiment, before transferring to the East African Pioneer Company/Corps.

In addition to his 1914-15 Star 'trio' he was Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 7 March 1918, refers) and awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for 'Devotion' (London Gazette 29 August 1918, refers). Returning home at some point after the cessation of hostilities, he clearly remained a very keen golfer and is noted as 'The professional' at the Neasden Golf Club from 1921; sold with a small quantity of copied research.
