Alexander Hempenstall was born at Wexford, Ireland in 1875 and attested with the Royal Field Artillery at Dublin on 15 May 1895. Posted to India in 1896 with the 70th Battery qualifying as a Shoeing Smith there he was in 1898 he was advanced to the rank in 1900, around the same time he passed a veterinary class.
Returning to Britian in 1902 with 145th Battery he was advanced Farrier Staff Sergeant in 1905 and Farrier Quartermaster-Sergeant in 1906. Posted to India in November 1913 Hempenstall was serving with the 90th Battery during the Great War, entering the war at Hafiz on 29 August 1915. He was discharged on 15 December 1919.
He is further entitled to the 1914-15 Star and Victory Medal.
