John Broom was born at Girvan, Ayrshire on 13 December 1834 and joined the 74th Foot at Glasgow in August 1857. He served variously in the East Indies (1yr 1 month), Malta (5yrs), Straights Settlements (1yr 2 months), Hong Kong (1yr 2 months) and was discharged there in March 1879, proceeding home. Sergeant Instructor of Musketry from November 1873 until his discharge, the veteran retired to be a Corporation Officer in Westwood, Ayrshire.
