O.B.E. London Gazette 31 December 1997:

'For services to prisoner welfare.'

George Evatt entered the Royal Navy as a boy rating in 1944 and, on specialising in signals, attained the unusual rate of Chief Radio Supervisor. He was likewise employed at the time of being awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in January 1960, when serving at the signals' establishment Mercury.

Commissioned as a Sub. Lieutenant for special duties in May 1960, he joined H.M.S. Meon in the Gulf, and he was employed as a communications specialist for the remainer of his career. An extended tour of duty on the books of Terror, the Singapore base, ensued in 1964-68, in which period he was clearly actively deployed in the Borneo and Malay Peninsula operations. He afterwards enjoyed further seagoing appointments in the aircraft carriers Bulwark in 1969-70 and Ark Royal in 1973-74.

Advanced to Lieutenant-Commander in the latter year, Evatt's final appointment was as Staff Communications Officer to the Flag Officer at Plymouth, and he was placed on the Retired List in February 1977.

Thereafter, he turned to good deeds as a member of the Board of Visitors at Dartmoor Prison, in which role he served for 20 years and was awarded the O.B.E.
