William Frank Goddard saw service in the Second World War and later took part in the amphibious invasion of Egypt with 42 Commando during the 1956 Suez Crisis. There they landed at Port Said with the mission of sealing off the Southern edge of the town. The unit faced heavy resistance and suffered some casualties in brutal street fighting, being forced to clear their way with air strikes on several occasions. Nevertheless they succeeding in securing the town alongside 40 Commando. Goddard was awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 9 June 1958.
