Five: Corporal A. Walker, Yorkshire Regiment, who was taken Prisoner of War during the Fall of Tobruk

1939-45 Star; Africa Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45; Efficiency Medal, G.VI.R., Territorial, (4390853 Cpl. A. Walker. Green Howards.), very fine (5)

Alfred Walker joined the Green Howards in 1938 and was posted to 'A' Company, 5th Battalion, joining them in France in June 1940. The Regiment was scattered following the Battle of Arras however Walker managed to escape at Dunkirk, being posted with the reformed Regiment to the Desert.

He was ill during the Battle of the Knightsbridge Box and as such missed the engagement which saw most of the Battalion taken prisoner. Instead Walker found himself posted to the 7th Battalion and sent to the line to take part in the Defence of Tobruk. The Garrison fell on 21 June and Walker went 'in the bag' one week later at Derna.

He was taken to Campo 82 in Italy and remained there until the Allied invasion, leaving the camp- which was unguarded at the time- he travelled to Rome where he remained until repatriated. His P.O.W. card was sent to his nearest family a 'Mr & Mrs Theaker' at Saltburn by the Sea. Upon his return to Britain Walker remained with the Territorial Army, being awarded the Efficiency Medal in 1946. He was known to have been living at Hinderwell in 1987; sold together with copied research.
