William Marton Coleman was born on 10 November 1906 at Auckland, New Zealand. He enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy on 25 August 1921 and was posted to H.M.A.S. Tingira followed by postings at Cerberus, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and lastly Canberra on 14 July 1928, serving aboard her until he was discharged on 10 April 1930.
He joined the New South Wales police force on 2 July 1930 as a police constable and when war was declared he enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy on 28 November 1940 and posted to H.M.A.S. Penguin. He served mostly on destroyers including Norman, Quickmatch, Napier, Quiberon, Warramunga and was shore discharged on 4 January 1946. The war over he returned to the New South Wales Police force being promoted Senior Constable on 2 July 1947, Sergeant 1st class on 13 July 1962 and Inspector 3rd class on 30 April 1965. He retired from the police force on 9 November 1966. Coleman died on 20 December 1970; sold together with copied research, his record of service from the NSW police.
