Sam Winfield Bannister was born at Nottingham on 9 April 1890 and had previously been a salesman before he enlisted into the Canadian Army Service Corps at London, Ontario on 27 December 1915. He attested at Shorncliffe, Kent in February 1916 and served on the Western Front from 11 August 1916 with the 4th Divisional Motor Transport Company.
Bannister was admitted to No.11 Canadian Field Ambulance on 25 September, being discharged on 30 September 1916 and was admitted again this time to No.1 Canadian Field Ambulance on 14 August 1917 and was discharged on 17 August. Awarded a Good Conduct badge on 18 February 1918 and returned to England on 19 May 1919, he was discharged from the service on 16 June 1919.
