(x) Pair: Private A. G. Thayne, 19th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force late Fiji Militia, who died of wounds sustained at Pope's Hill, Gallipoli on 13 December 1915

Alfred Gregory Thayne was born at Queensland, Australia in 1881 and enlisted on 3 June 1915, listing previous service in the Fiji Militia and 4th Militia Regiment (Victoria). Embarking for Gallipoli with the 3rd Reinforcement he arrived on the Peninsula in late October 1915.

Thayne was wounded in action near Pope's Hill on 13 December 1915, an eyewitness to his injury, Private Bradley, described the events, stating:

'Thayne was hit in the stomach by a broomstick bomb about dusk one evening, as he was one his way to the trenches. Witness was almost at 100 yards in the rear when this happened. Thayne was operated upon very shortly after he had been wounded, but apparently the operation was a forlorn hope, and he died on the following day.'

Buried at Shrapnel Valley Cemetery, notably Thayne was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, Fiji and a Justice of the Peace of New South Wales; sold together with copied research.
