1914-15 Star (1373 Pte. E. Henderson. Lan: Fus:); British War and Victory Medals (1373 Pte. E. Henderson. Lan. Fus.), good very fine (3)
Ebenezer Henderson was born at Kirkuddy, Fifeshire in 1896, the son of George and Ann Henderson. Attesting for the Lancashire Fusiliers at Salford, Lancashire he was posted to the 1/7th Battalion and entered the war at Gallipoli on 5 May 1915.
They landed at Cape Helles some two weeks after the initial landings and went into action the next day at the Second Battle of Krithia. They made two attacks on Gurkha Bluff in support of the 1/6th Battalion but were driven back both times.
Seeing little action after this point they were in the Reserve on the opening of the Third Battle of Krithia and were brought forward after the opening clashes. As a result the Battalion bore the brunt of the Turkish counter-attacks and in holding their ground suffered 179 casualties.
The end of the Battle saw the Battalion in and out of the line but not engaged in any major attacks, it was there that Henderson was killed in action on 21 July 1915. He is buried in the Redoubt Cemetery, Helles, Turkey; sold together with coped research.
