Alexander Nelson Stratton was born at Churt, near Farnham, Surrey on 16 February 1896 and was living at Beacon Hill, Hindhead at the start of the Great War. He enlisted into the Royal West Surrey Regiment and entered the war in the Balkans from 17 July 1915. Stratton joined the Royal Flying Corps (21446) and was originally serving with No. 28 Squadron before he began training as a Pilot flying out of Sedgeford with No. 64 Squadron. He Graduated on 25 April 1917 and gained his Royal Aero Club Aviators' Certificate No. 5247 on 25 April 1917, and was then posted to Mason's Yard on 1 May 1917.
Stratton was made Temporary Second Lieutenant on 9 October 1917. He was found unfit on several occasions between November 1917 and January 1918 but upon recovery was posted to 44 Training Squadron becoming an Assistant Instructor. He was placed on the Unemployed List on 11 October 1919. Stratton continued to fly regaining his certificate on 26 March 1933 No,11061 at the R.A.E. Club Farnborough flying an Avro Avian. Cirrus. 111 (80 H.P.).
