Frederick William Gibbs was born at Brighton on 13 March 1883 and was a blacksmith by trade upon his joining the Royal Navy as a Blacksmiths Mate on 13 June 1904. Advanced Blacksmith in September 1911, he served aboard Blanche from 23 June 1913-31 March 1919. She shared in the Battle of Jutland, with Gibbs taking one of four Russian Medals for the action. By early 1918, she laid mines at the entrance to the Kattegat on the nights of 18/19 and 24/25 February 1918, part of her total of 1,238 mines laid during 16 sorties during the Great War. Gibbs was pensioned ashore in June 1926.
