Three: Able Seaman F. Alcock, Royal Navy, who saw service at Tsingtao with Triumph and was later sunk with her off Gallipoli

1914-15 Star (J.434, F. Alcock. A.B., R.N.); British War and Victory Medals (J.434 F. Alcock. A.B., R.N.), good very fine (3)

Frank Alcock was born at Wolverhampton, Staffordshire on 28 July 1890 and enlisted on 29 January 1908 as Boy Class II. Reaching his majority in 1908 he was advanced Able Seaman the next year in December 1909. Joining the Battleship Triumph on 6 August 1914 he was present with her for the bombardment of Tsingtao during the Anglo-Japanese siege of the enclave.

After the fall of the city Triumph was posted to the Mediterranean where she was involved in probing the Dardanelles straights. During this period her boats participated in the sinking of the stranded British submarine E-15, before she could be stripped by the Ottomans. The next month she was patrolling off the straights when she was torpedoed by U-21 and started to sink, fortunately the bulk of her crew, including Alcock were evacuated before she capsized.

Posted back ashore he spent small period aboard various vessels including Barham and Rival before joining Achilles in 1918. He was to finish the war with this vessel and saw further service with Grafton before being invalided on 8 April 1920; sold together with a Triumph Christmas card and service record.
