William G. Ames was born at Willesborough, Ashford, Kent. He enlisted into the Royal Army Medical Corps on 12 September 1908 at Ashford, Kent. He entered the war on 23 August 1914 and served with the 10th Field Ambulance. He firstly suffered a shrapnel wound to the head on 27 April 1915 and was admitted to hospital at Boulogne and was transferred to the convalescent camp at Boulogne on 1 May 1915. He suffered a gun shot wound to the head on 2 July 1915 and was transferred straight back to the U.K. and was admitted to the St. John V.A.D. Hospital at Cheltenham on 3 July 1915 and remained there until 22 July 1915. He was discharged on 11 September 1915. He appears to re-enlist again this time having the service number 851 and has two separate Medal Index Cards showing entitlement for the Star and clasp on one and a British War and Victory Medal pair on the other.
