Belgian Croix de Guerre London Gazette 15 April 1918.

Robert Key Childs, a native of Mansfield, attested for the Lincolnshire Regiment and served with the 1st Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 13 August 1914. They saw heavy action at the First and Second Battles of Ypres and further fighting at Aubers Ridge and the Somme.

An article in the Mansfield Reporter on 19 April 1918 states that he was awarded the Croix de Guerre for '… the distinguished service which they have rendered the King of the Belgians…'

Returning to Britain he settled back in Mansfield and worked as a platelayer with the Midland Railway Company. Childs later appeared on the 1939-45 census however his fortunates appeared to have gone downhill at that stage, as he was living with his brother's family; sold together with copied research.
