William Marshall Smith was born in Glasgow to John Smith and his wife Annie. Smith enlisted with the 2nd Battalion Highland Light Infantry at Hamilton, Lanarkshire and was disembarked at the Western Front with his Regiment on 14 August 1914. Smith was serving with the 1st Battalion in France when he was killed in action on 18 March 1915.
Smith was interred back in Scotland at the Old Monklands Cemetery in Lanarkshire with other members of his family. He is also commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial in France.
His pension was intended to be claimed by his mother Annie, though she unfortuantely died before she was able to do so, and it instead went to his father John. Smith is further entitled to a Victory Medal; sold together with copied research.
