W. J. Harris served in the 22nd Depot Company, Army Service Corps during the Boer War, later earning his L.S. & G.C. as a Staff Sergeant-Major on 1 July 1907. He was commissioned Honorary Lieutenant & Quartermaster on 5 February 1913 and entered the war in that role on 12 August 1914; sold together with copied research and London Gazette entry.
