Joseph Grindrod was born at Castleton, Rochester, Lancashire in 1859 and attested on 14 January 1878. Two years later he was posted to Egypt for service in the Anglo-Egyptian War, arriving on 1 August 1882.
There the Guards Brigade joined the Battle of Tel-el-Kebir on the right side of the British line, behind Major-General Graham's Division. The British infantry stormed the Egyptian defences in the early hours of 13 September 1882, totally defeating Urabi Pasha's army.
The Guards did not remain for long in the country with Grindrod returning to Britain on 17 November the same year. He continued to serve until 1884 when he was transferred to the Army Reserve, being discharged on 15 January 1890; sold together with copied research.
