John James Gahagan was born on 16 August 1859 and served in the Egyptian Campaign with C Troop, Royal Engineers, earning him a medal but no clasps. He served in the ranks for a total of 17 years and 166 days and served as a Warrant Officer for 6 years and 40 days. Gahagan was promoted to honorary Lieutenant on 23 April 1902 and to honorary Captain on 23 April 1912. He retired as Quartermaster with honorary rank of Major on 16 August 1914 and was given the honorary rank on 24 April 1917. Despite his age Gahagan entered the Great War and served in France from 18 August 1918, his Medal Index Card confirms just the award of the British War Medal which he applied for on 7 June 1920 and this was sent to him at 276 Canterbury Road, Gillingham, Kent. Gahagan died in 1924.
