The Victory Medal 1914-19 to Second Lieutenant H. B. Clark, Army Service Corps, late British Red Cross Society, who was awarded both the O.B.E. and M.C. and who was additionally 'mentioned' for his Great War service, he was also one of the Clarks of the shoe manufacturing dynasty

[M.C.] London Gazette 22 June 1918. The original citation reads:

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He remained at his post during a withdrawal, superintending the transport services, and assisting in the evacuation of a town. He carried out his duties under most difficult conditions, being continually subjected to bombing and machine-gun fire from enemy aircraft. It was largely due to his coolness and initiative that the town was so satisfactorily evacuated.'

Hugh Bryan Clark was born in Street, Somerset, and was educated at the Friends' Schools in York and Reading before he joined C. & J. Clark Ltd in 1905. With the outbreak of the Great War he served originally as a chauffeur with the Friends' Relief Work and Friends' Ambulance Unit with the British Red Cross Society and first entered the war in France on 27 April 1915. He was commissioned into the Army Service Corps and was awarded both the O.B.E., M.C. and also 'mentioned' for his Great War service. After the war he returned to the family firm and took charge of Home Sales and set up their first shop in Regent Street, London, and was additionally one of the original directors of Peter Lord Ltd which he formed in 1937 and remained with them until 1961. Clark remained with C. & J. Clark until he retired form the board in 1957. He was additionally an active member of the Shoe Manufacturers Federation and was Honorary Treasurer of the Federation between 1938-1957. Clark died at Castle Cary, Somerset, on 16 February 1977.
