(x) South Africa 1877-79, 1 clasp, 1879 (1406. *ce. Sergt. W. Herbert. 1st D*n. Gds.), naming partially obscured due to wear, contact marks, otherwise very fine

W. Herbert was born in 1853 and enlisted with the 1st Dragoon Guards on 3 July 1875. He served in South Africa and is confirmed on the roll for this medal and clasp, listed as a Corporal. On 29 December 1881, as a Lance Sergeant, Herbert embarked with his Regiment on troopship H.M.S. Serapis bound for India; sold with copied medal roll and copied embarkation record.
