India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, Hunza 1891 (201 Sepy Labir 2d. Kash: Infy. I.S.T.), suspension claw re-pinned and slack, edge bruising, polished and worn with pride, fair

The campaign of 1891 in the Nagar Valley, Hunza-Nagar district in Gilgit-Baltistan (today Pakistan) must surely rank amongst the finest of the Victorian era in the annals of history.

A force of some 1,000 rifles, including those of the Kashmir Imperial Service Infantry, took part in the remarkable campaign in the similarly remarkable landscape. Roads were built across sheer mountains in order that the force might make their advance. Following the Siege of Nilt Fort, the Sieges of fortress at Thol and Maiun and the Capture of Thol and Baltit fort, the Mirs of Hunza and Nagar fled to China.

Such was the efforts of the force that three Victoria Crosses were awarded, to Captain (later Lieutenant-General & K.C.B.) Fenton John Aylmer, 13th Baronet, Royal Engineers and Lieutenants (later Brigadier-General) Guy Hudleston Boisragon & John Manners Smith (later Lieutenant-Colonel, C.I.E., C.V.O.) of the 5th Gorkha Rifles (Frontier Force). Numerous awards of the Indian Order of Merit were also granted.
