A Turkish Crimea Medal attributed to Colonel H. D. Crofton, 20th Regiment, who was awarded the Turkish Order of the Mejidie and Legion of Honour, who was severely wounded at the Battle of Inkermann and later murdered by a soldier in Devon

Hugh Denis Crofton was born at Dublin on 7 January 1814, the son of Emily and Sir Morgan George Crofton, 3rd Baron Crofton. He was serving as Colonel of the 20th Regiment of Foot during the Crimean war, seeing action at Alma and Inkermann, being seriously wounded at the latter engagement.
Crofton was killed on 15 September 1861 at Fulwood Barracks Preston, Devon where he was shot by a soldier of the 32nd Regiment. The murderer, Private McCaffery was subsequently shot for the crime, his case was immortalized in the song The Ballad of Private McCaffery.
Sold together with a contemporary envelope on which is written:
