(x) French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars
Napoleon Bonaparte in Cairo - Massacre of the Guides
"Au Caire le 25 fructidor au 6" (1798, 11 September) letter headed "Bonaparte General en Chef Ordonne" being an order that the Guides be assimilated with the French troops for the purposes of paying wages etc. Signed in full "Bonaparte". Rare.

Notes: The Guides Company acted as a form of reserve army, usually tasked with the escort of General in Chiefe, especially during the Italian campaign. In Egypt, Guides on horseback were utilised by Bonaparte in a form that would resemble the future Consular Guard. On August 2nd, Jullien, Bonaparte's Aide de Camp was escorted by a dozen Guides of the 75h demi-brigade where massacred at Alkam.
