Napoleon Bonaparte in Cairo
"Au Caire le 9 Thermidor an 6" (1798, 27 July) letter signed headed "Bonaparte General en Chef Ordonne" in Cairo, ordering that merchants of the Saga (gold market) pay eleven thousand Talaris to the French administration in the form of a tax. Signed in full "Bonaparte". Offered together with a printed document title "Bonaparte, membre de l'Institus national, General en Chef; Au Directoire Executif" being an official report of the landing of troops in Alexandria. A Rare and early document from the Egyptian campaign.

Notes: on the 22nd July, the dignitaries of Cairo met with Bonaparte in Giza in order to offer him the city of Cairo; the on the 25th, the French moved in and established their main head quarters. On the same day as this letter, Bonaparte wrote to Kleber in Alexandria that "We have in Cairo good Mint. We would need all the ingots we left in Alexandria in exchange for some cash that traders have given us".
