King George V
1924 Registered envelope posted from Sandringham / Norfolk, addressed in the hand of King George V initialled "G", to "Her Imperial Highness, The Grand Duchess Xenia, Copenhagen, Denmark", readdressed to Hvidore, Klampenborg, the residence of her mother, the Dowager Empress of Russia. Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna (1875-1960) was the sister of Tsar Nicholas II, rescued in 1919 from the Crimea aboard a gunship, the HMS Marlborough, sent by her cousin King George V to convey members of the Russian Imperial Family to England, via Malta. The King assisted the Grand Duchess in settling in England and they remained close during his lifetime (their mothers were sisters). An important cover emphasising the close bonds between the families, despite what occurred during the Russian Revolution. The cover has identifying labels ex the collection of Count Ahlefeldt-Laurvig Bille, a prominent Danish collector.
