Queen Victoria
1888 Autograph letter in French signed "VRI" by Queen Victoria to her cousin the King of the Belgians, Leopold II, with the original postally used envelope, franked 5d from London, addressed "A La Majeste / Le Roi des Belges / Ostende". Writing on mourning notepaper from Osborne, the Queen refers to a painting that needs altering and thanks the King for explaining to the artist what is needed. She says how pleased she'd be to see him at Balmoral but "unfortunately we can't put you up there as the Castle will be quite full". She sends best wishes to Marie and Clementine and signs herself as the King's devoted cousin and friend. An uncommon family letter, together with two court size postcards commemorating the Diamond Jubilee in 1897 (4)
