General C.G. Gordon (1833-1885)
1878 Autograph letter written from "near Wadi Halfa" by Gordon as Governor General of the Sudan, to Col. Harvey RE, Manchester, while "wending my way along the old Nile to Cairo", philosophising about their experiences and his imminent meeting with the Khedive "to see about the Finances". He signs it with an impression of his Arabic seal "to which I always write my name, for fear of forgery". With a document in Arabic dated at Cairo, the very seal impressed and signed, regarding the dismissal of a Dahabieh and arranging to pay wages to her crew" (2)
