General Gordon (1833-1885)
1864 Three sided autograph letter signed "C.G.Gordon", written from Quinsan, China. Gordon was posted to China as part of a Franco-British Force at the end of the Second Opium War. He lead the imperial army in suppressing the Taiping Rebellion, earning him the nickname "Chinese Gordon". In this letter he writes to the mother of a soldier taken prisoner and killed by the Rebels.
"I regret very much to be the bearer of bad news to you relative to your son Alfred Hughes, who joined the Force of Drilled Chinese in Jan '64. He served in the 4th Regiment up to the 31st March on which day he was most unfortunately taken prisoner by the Rebels, and I regret to say was killed. His body was recovered and buried with six of his comrades and his effects handed over to the Consul at Shanghai". A rare letter from Gordon's Chinese years
