Queen Elizabeth I
1559-1586 Vellum document in Latin with a complete seal of Elizabeth I attached (9cm in diameter). This was the First Great Seal in use from 1559. "The Queen, seated on a throne resembling a bedstead, crowned, holding in the right hand a sceptre ending in a fleur-de-lis, and supporting a huge orb on the left knee. From the baldachino two curtains descend to the sides of the throne". (The Great Seals of England, Wyon, 1887). The counter-seal (reverse) has an escutcheon supported by a greyhound and a crowned eagle, surmounted by the crown of England, the seal for legal writs before the justiciaries. Some wear but intact.
