The year of 1672 came to be known as the 'Rampjaar' or the 'Disaster Year' for the people of the Netherlands. According to a Dutch saying, 'the government was desperate, the people unreasonable and the country was hopeless'. The year brought with it the start of the Dutch War and attacks from England, France and the bishoprics of Munster and Cologne. The country's land army also did not prove to be of sufficient strength to counter such attacks. It is believed these medals, first awarded in 1672, were produced to be gifted to members of the 'Student Defence' from the University of Leiden.
