NGC MS62 | The Children of James III, AR Medal, c. 1737, by E. Hamerani or O. Hamerani, HVNC • SALTEM EVERSO • IVVENEM, armoured and draped bust right of Prince Charles, rev. TRIPLICIS • SPES TERTIA • GENTIS, armoured and draped bust right of Prince Henry, 45mm, 54.44g (Eimer -; MI ii, 493/35; Harding 63), some light pinmarking and hairlines to fields, otherwise with a cabinet tone and near-brilliant fields, struck-up in pleasingly high relief, extremely fine, scarce, in NGC holder, graded MS62 (Cert. #8222378-015)

Provenance

The Craven Collection of British Historical Medals

This further medal was issued by James II in 1737, and was probably engraved by Ermenegildo Hamerani. The Princes are not specifically named, but bear respectively, the legends: 'At least permit this youth to repair the ruins of the age', and 'The third hope of a triple nation'. These legends make another plea for the restoration of the House of Stuart. On the truncation are the wolf and twins which show the place of mintage as Rome. The absence of any really significant event suitable for Jacobite commemoration is telling.
