1840 Mulready
Facsimile
1840, a well printed copy of the one Penny letter sheet, the address panel showing a representation of the 1840 1d. black which shows the top right hand corner curled, possibly to indicate that the adhesive was to be affixed to a letter rather than printed. Designed by W.J. Stone of Washington D.C., published by Daniel Webster as part of a petition to the United States Congress urging for an adoption of the British Penny Post system. A few folds and bends, the top of the sheet with band of foxing and traces of having been bound within a book. Offered with a page taken from a bound publication detailing the resolution presented to the first session of the 26th. Congress, including a reprinted text of Rowland Hill's G.P.O. Notice, dated 28 April 1840, a small pamphlet of eight pages titled "Speech of Mr. Palfrey, of Massachusetts, on Postage Reform, Delivered in the House of Representatives, February 21st, 1849", and a modern printed sheet commemorating the submission of Webster's Resolution. A rare and attractive group. Photo
